The Capital, by Robert Menasse, 2017
Translated by Jamie Bulloch
Against the backdrop of a Europe in crisis, Menasse transports his readers to contemporary Brussels for a humorous fictionalized tour of European institutions. As the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the E.U. approaches, a colorful cast of characters plans how to celebrate the occasion – and how to further their own careers. Weaving together disparate narratives about each character, Menasse reveals the absurdities – and real dangers – of a fracturing political present. A tour de force from one of Austria’s most esteemed novelists, The Capital is a comical and timely saga of the European Union.
This reading group is free and open to all, and discussions will be held in English.
Robert Menasse studied German language and literature, philosophy, and political science in Vienna, Salzburg and Messina. Today he lives in Vienna and Amsterdam and works as a novelist and essayist.
